DonnaDonna Swanson Executive Director, Saint Paul Police Foundation

Education Improvement / Political Strategy / Collaborative Leadership / Fundraising

As a former educator, St. Paul legislative assistant and outreach director who’s committed to inspiring our community, I see myself as a lifelong leader both within government and outside of our public institutions. In all my roles, I have come to deeply respect the mission of not only the Saint Paul Police Department but police departments all over the country. And because I know of the countless wonderful things that police officers do, I love that my job as Executive Director for the Saint Paul Police Foundation involves supporting and shedding light on these terrific activities.

I am proud to lead an organization that’s changing lives for the better. Through initiatives like the Explores Program, Cops and Kids, the Police Athletic Program, Shop with Cops and Safe Summer Nights, the Saint Paul Police Foundation ensures that the SPPD can raise up our community and help those most in need. It receives no tax-levy dollars, but relies on gifts from corporations, individuals, foundations and other organizations. Since its founding in 2005, the Foundation has provided more than $4.5M in support to the SPPD.

Years of working towards positive social change, as well as my deep connection to educational improvement and social activist movements, paved the way to my role at the Foundation. Over the years, I’ve led successful education funding campaigns, helped pass historical public health legislation, developed educational plans for front-runner state political candidates, and successfully lobbied elected officials on educational policies.

I’ve had a sense of honor about public service since my childhood, when I proudly helped my parents prepare our South Dakota home to welcome Senator George McGovern to celebrate the announcement of his bid for President. I feel that same kind of pride directing the Foundation. Whether I’m returning phone calls, inviting people to support the Foundation with time or funds, or promoting the first-rate work of the SPPD, I never shy away from the work required to be successful, and to make the Foundation successful, every day.
