ST. PAUL, MINN. – August 19, 2014 – Holiday Lights in the Park, the Midwest’s largest outdoor holiday light display announced today the event will return to Saint Paul for another colorful and charitable season beginning on November 25 and running until January 1st, 2015.
The event will continue to be held at St. Paul’s Phalen Park. A new partnership between the St. Paul Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and The St. Paul Police Foundation, Holiday Lights in the Park are working to continue to provide a special community attraction that helps make the holiday season brighter for lights enthusiasts while supporting
those in need.

Holiday Lights in the Park raises money for local charities by welcoming carloads of holiday
lights seekers to the area’s largest nightly seasonal celebration. For the cost of $10 per vehicle,
visitors will experience a program of more than 60 larger-than-life holiday light sculptures and
animated displays from the comfort of their vehicles as they cruise through the park in the
evening hours.

To date, Holiday Lights in the Park has raised more than $336,000 over the past six years to
support local nonprofit organizations that support the residents of the Twin Cities. This year
Holiday Lights will once again raise funds to support the Union Gospel Mission and St. Paul
Parks Conservancy. Net proceeds will now also benefit the work of the St. Paul Police
Foundation which provides additional training and safety equipment to the St. Paul Police
Department.

“Holiday Lights is not only a destination for those who love creative holiday light displays, but it
is contributing financially to the people in our community,” said Saint Paul Mayor Chris
Coleman. “Phalen Park is the perfect backdrop for this annual family tradition that brings people
into our city, creates a sense of vibrancy and supports the organizations striving to make a
difference.”

The impact Holiday Lights in the Park has on the community extends long after the last holiday
reveler drives out of Phalen Park. Because of its large volunteer base and the generosity of
visitors, Holiday Lights can support community organizations all year long.

“This is a great way to celebrate the holiday season by bringing thousands of people into
our community and our city each night to enjoy the Holiday Lights,” said Saint Paul
Police Chief Thomas Smith. “We hope visitors that come to this event see not only a
great light display, but a safe and friendly community they want to return to.”

Planning for Holiday Lights in the Park begins soon after the previous year’s event ends. “We are
always looking to improve the experience. This year we have the most new displays we have ever
put out,” said Kate Kelly, executive director Holiday Lights in the Park. “The partnership
between everyone involved is what makes Holiday Lights in the Park so successful. This event
depends on the seamless integration of various law enforcement divisions to provide a safe
environment and adequate traffic flow. We are always pleased with how hard everyone works to
make sure this event runs smoothly and safely each of the 30-plus nights it is open.”

Saint Paul Police Foundation Chair Nancy Haas is also excited to announce a media event to
kick-off this charitable event is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 10th at Phalen Golf

National Night Out 2014

In the city of Saint Paul, National Night Out (NNO) has been an annual event on the first Tuesday of every August for the past 30 years. It is citywide celebration that includes all segments of the community to “Give Drugs & Crime A Going Away Party”!

This will continue to build stronger, healthier, neighborhoods with the quality of life that everyone desires and deserves. NNO also helps to build partnerships & trust between police & community.

Although NNO is a one day/night of the year event, neighbors repeatedly report that the neighbors they meet that day help to build stronger neighborhoods throughout the year. The relationships enable them to stay connected to one another, and help to encourage dialogue between each other so if they see or hear activities, they inform each other.

Last year’s NNO involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, businesses, and neighborhood
organizations. In all there were over 15,000 communities nationwide and over 37 million people participated in NNO 2013! In Saint Paul, we had over 300 events and it was estimated approximately 38,000 people participated which is why Saint Paul was recognized by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) as third highest out of 142 other cities with similar populations as Saint Paul.

National Night Out is designed to:
• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
• Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and
• Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and will not tolerate their criminal behavior

Neighborhoods choose what works for them as far as what and how they will hold their events.

Along with the traditional block parties, may neighbors ‘celebrate’ NNO with events and activities such as:
• Cook outs
• Pot luck dinners
• Games, sidewalk chalk
• Parades and treasure hunts
• EVERYONE AGREES TO TURN ON THEIR PORCH OR OUTSIDE LIGHTS!

Get involved and strengthen your neighborhood with an NNO event! Call Pam McCreary today for more information at 651-266-5455.
